The attacks happened at 13 hospitals, mostly at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria, where nurses reported being punched and bitten, among other forms of abuse.

Bitten by a patient experiencing a psychotic episode, punched in the face, strangled, kicked in the abdomen ... These are some of the attacks suffered by Gauteng hospital staff in the hands of patients.

This was revealed on Wednesday by Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in a written reply to the DA’s questions in the Gauteng legislature.
